Peter Swan:

CEO, Gust

About Peter Swan:

The majority of my career has been spent working with early-stage startups. I started as a software engineer, moved into engineering leadership, then to product, and finally to leading a company as CEO at Gust.

On the technical side, I've worked in a ton of different languages across the front and back end of application development, done a good deal of devops and infrastructure work, built APIs, re-platformed applications, set testing culture, you name it. I have a soft spot for functional programming but I've been around long enough that I don't really care about the language anymore--as long as you can use it to create something great. I'm a big fan of pair programming and behavior driven development.

My time in product has been largely focused on build tools for founders, accelerators, and investors. That means lots of experience with complex UX, education as product, and challenging customers. It also means I know more than I ever expected to about forming a company, managing equity, running early operations, and fundraising (both the process and the underlying mechanics).

I'm passionate about helping people with great ideas turn them into great companies. Especially those coming at it for the first time.

Here are some things I can help navigate:

  • What type of entity should I form?

  • How should I think about the valuation of a company?

  • How do I split equity between co-founders and other early team members?

  • What the heck is a SAFE or Convertible Note and how do they work?

  • How does fundraising work practically?

  • Should I fundraise right now?

  • Should I fundraise later?

  • What does an MVP look like?

  • How do I turn customer feedback into product features?

  • How do I build a good product engineering culture?
